State of Texas: Amid border division, a push to build bridges AUSTIN (Nexstar) — The Department of Justice announced Wednesday afternoon that it filed a lawsuit against Texas over its contentious new border security law, accusing the state of infringing on federal authority and empowering local police to unconstitutionally arrest suspected illegal immigrants.Last week, federal authorities threatened to sue to block Senate Bill 4 if Governor Greg Abbott did not assure them the state will not enforce the law by January 3.According to the complaint filed in an Austin federal court, the DOJ argues that "Texas’s Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) creates purported state immigration crimes for unlawful entry and unlawful reentry, permits state judges and magistrates to order the removal of noncitizens from the country, and mandates that state officials carry out those removal orders. Much of the snowfall came Friday evening, and some still had an opportunity to enjoy the snow on Saturday. MLK state birthday celebration kicks off Saturday in St. Louis ST. LOUIS - Saturday marked the kickoff for the statewide Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration.The event was held at Harris-Stowe State University. The celebration marks the beginning of events statewide to honor the civil rights leader.The federal holiday on January 15 will celebrate MLK's birthday. A special state commission is coordinating the activities. Snow blankets St. Louis, more winter weather expected "All the cities and towns of Missouri have representatives on this commission that plan programs honoring Dr. King and continuing his legacy," said Rev.
