Local businesses participate in Small Business Saturday despite snow, cold DENVER (KDVR) -- Businesses across the Denver metro celebrated Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25, a day created to celebrate and support small businesses.The celebration was first started by American Express in 2010 and has been sponsored by the Small Business Association since 2011. American Express created a map of the local small businesses participating in the tradition.Businesses open despite snow, cold tempsTemperatures in Denver will not get above freezing all Saturday, according to the forecast by Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez. More salmonella cases, two deaths reported as cantaloupe recall expands (CNN) — Two people are dead and at least 99 have become ill in a salmonella outbreak tied to contaminated cantaloupes and cut fruit, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.Salmonella cases have now been reported in 32 states in connection with this outbreak, and 45 people have been hospitalized. 2 Iron Range police officers injured in fire; apparently suicidal man dies VIRGINIA, Minn. — Two Virginia police offers were injured early Thanksgiving Day in a structure fire that claimed the life of an apparently suicidal man, according to a release from the Iron Range city’s police department.Officers were dispatched at about 4:55 a.m. Thursday to respond to a man threatening to burn down a building with himself inside. When they arrived, they found the apartment on fire, and officers could not persuade the individual to leave the building before the structure was engulfed in flames. The man was later located deceased inside the apartment.One of the two officers was treated for smoke inhalation and released, but the other suffered severe burns to multiple parts of his body.Fire departments from Virginia, Mountain Iron, Fayal and Gilbert, as well as the Eveleth EMS and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department assisted on the scene.The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and state fire marshal’s office are investigating the incide...
