At least 3 killed, others wounded in New Mexico shooting, police say

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — At least three people were killed and several others, including two police officers, were wounded Monday in a northwestern New Mexico community before law enforcement shot and killed the suspect, authorities said.The shootings occurred at around 11 a.m. in Farmington, a city of about 50,000 people that serves as a modern-day trading post to the adjacent Navajo Nation reservation and is a supply line and bedroom community to the region’s oil and natural gas industry.The city's police department said in a Facebook post that at least three members of the public were killed and that officers confronted and killed a suspect at the scene. DENVER (KDVR) -- A road at Cherry Creek Reservoir buckled and collapsed after several days of rain hit the Front Range.Photos of the damage show a road that was totally washed away where it was submerged in runoff flood water. Watch out for damaged, flooded roads near Cherry Creek State Park The road buckled just days after a storm broke rainfall records across the Centennial State. Both the east and west boat ramps were closed because of road damage, so boats could not get on the water. As of Monday morning, small hand-launch vessels could still get on the water. Colorado mushroom season is early this year, experts say

DENVER (KDVR) -- Mushroom hunting season came early in Colorado thanks to a good snow year and spring moisture. You might see mushrooms start to pop up in plain sight — in the park, walking the dog, on a hike or even in your garden. The mushroom season is typically short in Colorado, thriving from the end of June to the middle of August, according to mycologist and president of Colorado Mycological Society Jon Sommers. However, this year the experts are starting early. Jennifer Bell, president of the Pikes Peak Mycological Society, said she is already scouting for upcoming club forays. She’s looking for oyster mushrooms and morels.“When we get snow in the winter, that moisture doesn’t just appear and then go away, that builds a base for what’s to come in the summer,” she said. “It’s looking good now, so all you need is a couple days of heat.” Mushroom hunting is one more reason to get outside. A man arrested for DUI in Colorado tried to change places with dog, police say

SPRINGFIELD, Colo. (AP) — A driver, who was pulled over for speeding, tried to switch places with his dog to avoid arrest, police in Colorado said.An officer watched him maneuvering inside the car before he got out on the passenger side on Saturday night in Springfield, a town of about 1,300 people on the state’s Eastern Plains, police said in a Facebook post Sunday.The man said he was not behind the wheel and clearly showed signs of being drunk, police said. He ran from the officer when asked about how much he had had to drink and was caught within about 20 yards (18 meters), police said.After being taken to the hospital to be checked out, the man was arrested on suspicion of charges including driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and driving while ability impaired as well as for previous warrants for his arrest.

Higher pollen levels impact spike in seasonal allergies

People with seasonal allergies have been hit hard this spring as the amount of pollen in the air increases.As many contend with sneezing, runny noses and other reactions, higher than normal amounts of tree pollen combined with recent weather are playing a role.“The spring season is classic for the tree pollens,” said Dr. Aleena Banerji, the clinical director of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. “And that is what we’re all feeling right now.”After a mild April and well-above average start to May, sunshine is encouraging people to get outside. BALTIMORE — A passenger walks up to an airport security checkpoint, slips an ID card into a slot and looks into a camera atop a small screen. The screen flashes “Photo Complete” and the person walks through — all without having to hand over identification to the TSA officer sitting behind the screen.It’s all part of a pilot project by the Transportation Security Administration to assess the use of facial recognition technology at a number of airports across the country.“What we are trying to do with this is aid the officers to actually determine that you are who you say who you are,” said Jason Lim, identity management capabilities manager, during a demonstration at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.The technology is currently in 16 airports.
