DA: Juvenile pretrial bed cap 'literally makes our communities less safe' DENVER (KDVR) — The Problem Solvers continue to investigate Colorado’s limit on spaces for juveniles who have been arrested and await trial.  Right now, the state’s cap is at 215, a number that has continuously gone down since 2003. Some local district attorneys said this law is not making the streets safer.  “Youth violence is one of the biggest problems we’re facing right now,” said Brian Mason, the 17th Judicial District attorney, suggesting this legislation is harmful to public safety.  “Every day this week, my staff has had to have a meeting where we’ve talked about who is the least dangerous kid on this list that we have to let out in order to open up a bed for someone who is more dangerous,” Mason said. Vigil held for Longmont teen shot, killed at ‘car meet-up’ The 17th Judicial District covers Adams and Broomfield Counties, an area that has seen an abundance of incidents involving teens in the last year. “We had three back-to-back-to-back shootouts this fall, and they were...

Cron, Rockies rain homers on Padres for 7-2 opening win SAN DIEGO (AP)C.J. Elehuris Montero followed with another homer off reliever Domingo Tapia.Colorado had 17 hits, with the heart of the order collecting 10 - four by Cron and three apiece by Kris Bryant and Charlie Blackmon. The Rockies also struck out 17 times and committed three errors, including one by Cron at first base.Expectations are so high for the superstar-laden Padres, who made a stirring run to the NL Championship Series last year, that some in the sellout crowd of 45,103 booed when left fielder Juan Soto let Bryant's fly ball fall in for an RBI single in the sixth. There were more boos when Cron and Montero went...

Celtics make statement, demolish NBA-leading Bucks behind Jayson Tatum’s 40 points With just more than a week remaining in the regular season, it may be too late for the Celtics to catch the Bucks in the race for the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, especially after Tuesday’s horrendous loss to the Wizards. But that didn’t stop them from making a statement in Milwaukee on Thursday night. The Celtics were due for a strong response – given that loss and the opponent – but probably not this strong. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the Celtics went into Fiserv Forum and handed the best team in the NBA its worst loss of the season, a 140-99 bludgeoning that was over by halftime. The C’s didn’t overreact after Tuesday’s loss in Washington, saying it was a one-off kind of performance during a strong stretch. Two nights later, after they responded to one of their worst losses of the year with one of their best wins, the tone didn’t change much.“Honestly, they played last night,” Al Horford told reporters in Milwaukee of the Bucks, who were coming off a blowout win over the Pac...

China’s global influence looms over Harris trip to Africa DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — When Vice President Kamala Harris touches down in Lusaka, Zambia on Friday for the final stop of her weeklong trip across Africa, she’ll see a glittering new airport that’s doubled in size. Rather than a symbol of promising local development, it’s a reminder of China’s deep influence there. Beijing financed the project, one of many that has expanded its footprint on a booming continent that’s rich in natural resources, often generating goodwill among its citizens. The global rivalry between the United States and China has been a recurring backdrop for Harris’ journey, and nowhere has that been more apparent than Zambia and her previous stop in Tanzania. Besides the airport, China built a 60,000-seat stadium in Lusaka, plus roads and bridges around the country. Zambia is on the hook for all of the development with billions of dollars in debt. Tanzania is a major trading partner with China, and it has a new political leadership school funded by the...
