Nearly half of Americans are letting gift cards go unused, report finds

Check your junk drawers: There’s a chance you have almost $200 sitting somewhere in your home that you may have forgotten about.Bankrate found that nearly half of U.S. adults have at least one unused gift card, voucher or store credit.Senior industry analyst Ted Rossman said 47% of Americans have unused money in those forms, and he said now is good time to plan on using them.“This is really a good inflation buster I think,” said Rossman.In the survey, Rossman said Bankrate discovered the average value of available gift card money is $187. Considering how many Americans may have that much sitting around, the total adds up to $23 billion.“We can be our own worst enemies, sometimes where we forget about it, it’s out of sight out of mind, we lose it, the store goes out of business, a lot of people lose value, unfortunately,” Rossman said.Most likely to have gift cards go unused are Millennials (52%) and Gen Zers (47%.) Carolina Hurricanes sign defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a 1-year deal

(AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal, bringing him back to the team for the second time in three seasons.The deal announced Monday will pay $1.675 million to the 27-year-old DeAngelo, who spent the 2021-22 season with Carolina as an offensive threat on the blue line. DeAngelo had 10 goals and 41 assists in 64 games with the Hurricanes, then had one goal and nine assists in 14 playoff games that season.Carolina traded him to Philadelphia last summer for a fourth-round pick, and DeAngelo had 11 goals with 31 assists in 70 games last season. School bus aide accused of sexual assault on a child

DENVER (KDVR) -- A Cherry Creek School District employee has been accused of sexually assaulting a child on a school bus, a Greenwood Village Police Department offense report said. Wayne Smith, 77, was arrested on July 6 on charges of felony sex assault on an at-risk child and two counts of tampering with evidence, according to the district. Greenwood Village Police were told by a district middle school principal on Feb. 1 about the alleged "inappropriate touching" of a disabled student, the report said. Smith was fired on Feb. 2, according to the district.
