United Airlines agrees to give union pilots big pay raises

United Airlines and the union representing its pilots said Saturday they reached agreement on a contract that will raise pilot pay by up to 40% over four years.The union valued the agreement at about $10 billion. It followed more than four years of tumultuous bargaining that included picketing and talk of a strike vote. The deal reflects the leverage enjoyed by labor groups, especially pilots, as airline revenue soars on the strong recovery in travel. The Air Line Pilots Association said the agreement, which is subject to a ratification vote, would put United pilots on par with counterparts at Delta Air Lines, who approved a pay-raising deal earlier this year.The union said the agreement includes substantial increases in pay, retirement benefits and job security. (AP) — A gunman opened fire on police and firefighters as they responded to a traffic crash in Fargo, North Dakota, killing one officer and wounding two others, the city’s police chief said Saturday. Chief Chief David Zibolski said the gunman opened fire Friday afternoon for “no known reason at all” but that he was confident investigators will eventually figure out the motive.Zibolski said Saturday that officer Jake Wallin, a military veteran, was killed. NEW YORK (AP) — The former leader of a safety patrol in Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community pleaded guilty Friday to charges he sexually abused a teenage girl.The plea allows Jacob Daskal, who led a neighborhood watch group called a shomrim, to avoid a trial in a case that alleged he groomed a 15-year-old girl for sex.As part of the plea agreement, Daskal must register as a sex offender, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. Authorities said Daskal subjected to the girl to sexual acts over a three-month period in 2017. AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Austin Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect involved in an aggravated assault in north Austin, police said in a news release Friday.At approximately 8 a.m., May 5, officers responded to the 9300 block of Northgate Boulevard for the assault, the release said. According to police, the male victim, who was not identified by police Friday, was standing in a parking lot waiting for a ride to work, when another man approached him. AUSTIN (KXAN) – The City of Austin is one step closer to making major improvements to the Barton Springs Bridge. The bridge has been standing over Barton Creek for nearly 100 years, and though it is still safe, it ranked on a list of the top five bridges in Austin in most need of repair or replacement in 2018. The city also recognizes mobility concerns for vehicles, bikers and pedestrians with the current structure.  PREVIOUS: Barton Springs Bridge in need of major rehabilitation, here is what is coming next In November 2020, voters approved over $100 million dollars for Austin infrastructure improvements, which included potential funding to address the bridge.
